The Lightning Network is the set of nodes and payment channels layered over Bitcoin. Publicly announced channels can be observed and measured; private channels cannot.
Reading network statistics
- Capacity is bitcoin committed to publicly announced channels — not a supply figure or a valuation.
- Node and channel counts describe the observable public network only.
- Figures differ between providers because each observes the network from its own vantage point.
